Most of the world’s countries could run on 100% renewable energy by 2050, says study.

A new study, conducted by The Solutions Project, traces a roadmap for 193 countries to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050. Reaching this goal would enable to deliver on the Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming to 1,5°C; it implies stopping dependence from fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Instead, wind and solar power would be the main energy sources, among power mixes which can vary from country to country and also include other technologies such as tidal energy. 100% renewable comprises not only electricity use, but also heating and transportation fuel – and this target hasn’t been met by any country so far, making this vision a real challenge. What’s more, China and the USA, world’s largest economies, do not figure among the list of the 10 best energy performers. Also, such a transition would imply a considerable amount of job losses across the energy industries (27 million). However, this figure would be balanced by a larger job creation effect (52 million) – an anticipated net increase of 24.3 million jobs.
